Water is the one breakroom amenity nearly everyone in a building uses, whether or not they drink coffee. In a city that regularly logs weeks of triple-digit heat, it also does more work than most amenities on the list.
This post covers what a filtered water and chewable ice service includes, why hydration matters for San Antonio workplaces, where the service fits, and what to plan for when setting one up.
What the service includes
A filtered water and chewable ice service puts both amenities in the building and keeps them running, with the provider handling the upkeep.
Filtered water. Dispensers in the break areas and work zones that need them, with cold, filtered water for bottles and cups.
Chewable ice. Ice machines that make the soft, chewable style many people prefer in their drinks, serviced on the same visits as the water units.
Service and maintenance. Filter changes, sanitizing, and repairs are part of the program, and the schedule is tracked on our side.
Why hydration matters at work in San Antonio
San Antonio's heat is a workplace factor for much of the year. By KSAT's count, the city recorded 75 days of 100 degrees or more in 2023 and 58 in 2022. Warehouses, docks, production floors, and service bays often run warm through those stretches, even with the building closed up.
OSHA's heat guidance for employers comes down to water, rest, and shade, and it recommends encouraging workers to drink water every 15 minutes in hot conditions. That guidance is easier to follow when cold, filtered water and ice sit close to where people work.
In climate-controlled offices, the case is more everyday. Refilling a water bottle is a habit for many people through the work day, and filtered water and ice serve the whole team, including the people who skip coffee.
Where it fits
Water and ice service has few requirements. It suits a small office as readily as a multi-building facility, and it serves every shift the same way.
Offices. One unit in the breakroom covers a small team. Larger offices add units by floor or wing so no one is far from a refill.
Warehouses and distribution centers. Units near the dock, on the floor, and in the break area keep water close to crews during long, warm shifts.
Manufacturing and production. Hot process areas and multi-shift schedules make steady access to cold water and ice part of how the day runs.
Service and healthcare facilities. Staff areas used around the clock benefit from water and ice that are available at any hour.
What to plan for
A few practical questions shape the setup, and the site survey answers each of them.
Placement. Water and ice belong where people work and take breaks. Each spot needs power and a water connection, and ice machines may also need a drain.
Number of units. Headcount per area, walking distance, and shift overlap decide how many units the building needs and where they go.
Service frequency. Usage sets the schedule for filter changes and sanitizing, and it adjusts as the team grows or the season changes.
Some locations can't support a water connection where it's needed, such as certain leased suites or temporary sites. We'll say so during the survey and recommend what works in that space.
Pairing water and ice with coffee and more
Water and ice pair naturally with office coffee service, and the three can run as one program on a single service schedule. That combination covers the drinks nearly everyone in the building reaches for during the day.
From there, the program can grow with the business. A micro market adds chef-crafted meals and a full range of beverages and snacks, and pantry service adds fully sponsored items for the team and guests. Each piece works on its own, and companies add them as their needs change.
Getting started
A site survey maps where water and ice are needed, what each location can support, and how often service should run. From there, we propose a setup sized to the building, whether that's one breakroom or several floors and shifts.
The survey is free. Call STX Vending at (210) 903-9363 or reach us through our contact page, and we'll walk your San Antonio facility.
